Why Alkaline?

Your body works hard to maintain a healthy balance between acid (lower on the pH scale) and alkaline (higher on the pH scale), helping your systems operate efficiently. When there is an imbalance due to stress, lack of sleep, and over consumption of acidic foods (such as sugar, processed foods and alcohol) your body has to work harder to maintain its optimal pH level. How? Many people are choosing to consume more alkaline foods and drinks to help their bodies maintain a healthy pH balance. Why not you?

Alkalinity Of Food

Below is a picture of what the pH scale looks like, drinks like soda and energy drinks fall on the far left (acidic), while foods like spinach, broccoli and lemons falls on the far right (alkaline).

pH 3 - Carbonated Water, Energy Drinks, Bacon, Sausage, Cola, French Fries,
pH 4 - Black Tea, Pickles, Nuts, Cream Cheese, Prunes, Pastries, Pasta, Cheese, Pork, Beer, Wine
pH 5 - Coffee, Beef, White Bread, Nuts, Wheat, Most Bottled Waters, Ketchup, Mayonnaise
pH 6 - Grains, Eggs, Fish, Beans, Soy Milk, Coconuts, Brown Rice, Barley, Oats
pH 7 - Most Tap Water
pH 8 - Apples, Tomatoes, Olive, Mushroom, Turnips, Bananas, Capsicum, Pumpkin, Mushrooms

What Does Low ORP Mean And Why Is It Important?

Oxidation describes the rates at which something degrades. ORP stands for oxidation reduction potential; it is a measure of the tendency of a chemical species to acquire electrons and thereby be reduced or to break down. It is measured in millivolts (mV) and can easily be measured with an ORP meter. Generally, tap water has an ORP from +200 to +600mv. Bottled water tends to have high ORP levels of more than +400mv. A negative ORP reading indicates that a substance will give electrons and reduce other cells. The lower the reading, the less likely it will be to oxidize molecules around it making it an ‘antioxidant’. Alkaline water has a reduced ORP value, meaning that it works to slow down the degradation of your cells. Most other types of water have a much higher ORP and will thus oxidize surrounding cells (causing them to break down and age faster).

What are antioxidants and why are they important?

Antioxidants are molecules that are capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Involved in oxidation reactions are free radicals that work as intermediate steps to make a chain of oxidizing reactions that damage cells. Antioxidants terminate these chain reactions by removing the free radical intermediates and inhibit other oxidation reactions by being oxidized themselves. Antioxidants are nature’s way of fighting off potentially dangerous molecules, free radicals, in the body. Free redicals are unstable molecules that feed off otherwise healthy molecules in order to survive. They are introduced into the body every day causing cell damage that can lead to chronic or degenerative diseases. Our body creates its own antioxidants to neutralize free radicals; however, our body is only capable of producing a certain amount of antioxidants on its own. At the same time, we are faced with an increasing number of environmental toxins in everyday life. That is why it is important to eat foods rich in antioxidants and to choose to drink water with low ORP values that provide the body with an added source of antioxidants to fight free radicals.
